ASCRIBING MINDS TO MACHINES

Efforts to make machines behave intelligently (%2artificial intelligence%1
abbreviated AI)

As computer programs become more sophisticated, there is an increasing
tendency to use mental terms such as %2wants%1 and %2believes%1 in describinW
their internal states and their behavior. Our thesis is that this is
legitimate to ascribe mental properties to machines, provided it is done
correctly, but doing it correctly requires some new techniques of definition
that also lead to better definitions of mental terms in the case of people.
